According to Shinya in SHOXX #69, he and Kyo (京) met for the first time when Kyo came to watch Shinya's session band (name unknown, vocalist Unknown / guitarist #4 / guitarist SHIGE / bassist KISAKI / drummer Shinya) in August 1995.
In the same magazine, Shinya mentions that he and Die met for the first time when Ruby and Ka・za・ri performed at the same live in September 1995.
Kyo (京) and Kaoru (薫) meet for the first time at Osaka-jo Hall while handing out flyers for La:Sadie's and CHARM, respectively.

Dir en grey (ディル・アン・グレイ) officially forms.
The name is a combination of German "dir", French "en" and English "grey" and, according to an interview in Apres Guerre #19 (March 1997), was thought to mean "Grey Silver Coin" (灰色の銀貨 Haiiro no Ginka). It was supposed to convey a music and an image that wasn't caught by neither black or white, so they picked "grey".
The band took their name from a song on a demo tape released in 1995 by LAREINE. The song is called "Dir en gray" and opens with the line "灰色のあなたに dir en gray" (Haiiro no anata ni dir en gray), which both means "To you in gray" and would actually fit the intended meaning of the words, as opposed to "Grey Silver Coin". In the aforementioned interview, Kyo mentions that he knew the phrase before and during a live from Lareine's former vocalist Kamijo in 2015, Shinya explained that they took the band name from the song name and simply changed the letter "a" to "e". This was further corroborated by Kaoru in the WOWOW Special interview in 2020, where he explained that they took the name from the song of a band that was famous at that time. Why Dir En Grey thought that "dir" means "silver coin" remains unclear, but they would later become aware of their mistake.
In turn, Lareine got the name "Dir en gray" from a band called Dir ɛ̃ Gray, a visual-kei band that was active around 1991. The original meaning behind the name was "dill of grey colour" (dill is usually white) and was coined by guitarist SHOW. Interestingly, their name was written with the same Katakana as Dir En Grey, ディル・アン・グレイ, even though "and" would be written as アンド (ando) in Japanese.
According to an interview in Shellruby #1 (1998), the band had around 20 possible names and decided on "Dir En Grey" at a family restaurant. At first, Kyo and Toshiya didn't like it, they thought it sounded uncool and too similar to GLAY. According to Toshiya on the radio show Nack5 FM Triangle Super Audition, one of the other names the members had in mind was Kisaragi. It was taken from a high school band of Toshiya. According to Kyo in the aforementioned WOWOW Special interview, they narrowed it down to two names, with three people voting for "Dir En Grey" and Kyo and one other member voting for the other name.

DIR EN GREY is an active visual kei band. They are part of the kote kei and loud kei subgenres. They have been active since 1997.
i have to admit that these guys are old and they're more likely to be fascinated w ai instead of being critical, even though they're pioneering artists and visionaries with huge careers in music behind their backs. they definitely have the recources to educate themselves, but they're focusing on other things. i think when a band chooses ai for any kinds of contents it means they kind of admit they lost the ability to come up with something unique themselves, so they try to reinvent, recycling what's been done without adding anything new... it's sad to see them go down this route

By using Al instead of hiring real artists, is this not a form of censorship? As an influential band with plenty of money and resources, is it not hypocritical to value soulless 'AL art' rather than supporting real visual artists? What is the point of claiming to be anti-censorship, when one chooses the machine over the human? Is the machine not created specifically with the intent to be the 'perfect being that will never rebel? Opting to use Al, when one has the means to hire real artists (whose jobs are becoming obsolete because of AI), is lazy. It betrays almost everything the band had built itself upon for the past 30 years. Of the music videos contents, I honestly find it rather boring. The pink Al landscape is sickening, and not really even that interesting. Whatever meaning is intended by the band is lost in the fact that it simply isn't cohesive. It's random objects mashed together: I wonder, is this really what the band wants? A sanitized, meaningless version of itself?
kyo was someone who never took an easy route to express his art to the maximum
harming himself onstage to get across the full extent of the meaning and deep feeling beneath each song
so why do any of dir en grey feel the need to take the easy option of ai. its like theres nothing groundbreaking or defiant about it theyre just conforming to the uprise of ai and loss of real art and real genuine artists which i believed they were and thats what hurts as someone who looked up to them all so much. how can a band that made some of the most well illustrated, disturbing and yet authentic pvs such as obscure think its okay to abandon all that to conform to this new age of ai bullshit? kaoru and kyo should know how it feels to risk your art being stolen from you from the fact they've faced injury which threatened to take that from them
and yet they wanna contribute to the theft of creativity that ai fuels just ugh. dir en grey deserve backlash for abandoning their core values which kept them going for so long if anything. would genuinely rather dir en grey announce that they are retiring/disbanding than this so i could forever keep my image of them.
i saw somewhere on a forum that when kisaki left la:sadie's, toshiya joined then they changed their name to dir en grey. i don't know if that was implied or true or the bands are two completely different. they didn't say any sources but i thought it was interesting

what I think is la:Sadies broke up, then the members stayed together (excluding kizaki) then formed a new band with toshiya as the new bassist
or they got back together and changed the name
you could look at it both ways though its basically the same thing
I think this is pure speculation and maybe the comment section here is not the best place for rumours (a forum would be better...), but they seem to get along just fine, certainly better than the years they were struggling to break overseas in 2005 or 2006. I believe there is an old post on DYNAMITE TOMMY's blog or some sort of fan club magazine mentioning how Kyo almost left the band around that time (I might be wrong because this was 5000 years ago)...
They've probably had their ups and downs over the years. You can't expect people to work together for so long and not have a few falling outs. I remember there being a period around the Uroboros and Arche era where Kyo apparently didn't know where anyone but Shinya lived, but I think that's long gone now. Ever since their new album came out, they seem to have rekindled their friendships and interact with eachother way more than they used to, and have way more synergy as a band
