ALI PROJECT forms.
Although ALI PROJECT is more closely related to the goth scene, vocalist Takarano ALLICA (宝野 アリカ) has specifically stated that she considers the project to also be visual kei. Per vkgy's guidelines, this is enough to classify them as a visual kei band.
ALI PROJECT is an active visual kei band. They are part of the tanbi kei subgenre. They have been active since 1985.
Beautiful ABSOLUTELY beautiful. I was so much more obsessed with them, and i still am! I love all of their songs and i love Arika's EGL looks as a lolita myself! I'll keep on loving them forever and ever ~
Ali project is vkei as stated in this video https://youtu.be/Akhc2SO3X8g?si=yVQR88kzze9H7C49
But they don't play shows with vkei bands, play music typical of vkei, or look very much like vkei, or otherwise participate in the subculture. They are a great gothic pop band but not vkei.
vkei is a label bands put on themselves, otherwise we could lable kiss, slipknot, iron maiden for example as vkei. which they arent but definitely do fulfil the requirements off. point is visuals arent something that can be defined and its up to artists to label what they are
No they don't fill the requirements. You don't understand the requirements if you think that. Visual kei has a unique collection of sounds and looks that isn't like anything else. And more than anything, visual kei bands play at visual kei live houses with other visual kei bands. Ali Project, and all the bands you mentioned, don't do anything like that.
Yeah, vkei is a scene. If an artist doesn't participate in the scene, they're not really vkei. And while vkei can sound like a lot of things, there are indeed special elements to the sound that differentiate them from the other bands.
Well, I don't see why Ali Project can't be seen as vkei though. Visual kei websites like ViSULOG and VROCKHK have made some reports about them. Besides, Arika's style resembles that of Kaya's.
Most vkei bands do play at visual kei live houses with other vkei bands. However, there are exceptions, such as DISACODE and exist trace nowadays. Therefore, whether a band do live with other vkei bands isn't really a "criterion."
Of course playing with visual kei bands is a criterion for being considered visual kei. Any artists who don't are exceptions to the rule, or no longer vkei.
That being said, for vkgy's purposes, it doesn't matter whether or not ALI PROJECT meets any definition of visual kei, because their leader declared them as such. That is all it takes to be included here, per our rules.
So on vkgy, “ALI PROJECT is visual kei.” But anyone is allowed to hold a different personal opinion, and is probably justified in doing so.
Locking this thread because there's nothing else to discuss with regard to vkgy's decision on keeping the ALI PROJECT profile up. However, I welcome anyone who wants to vkei vs non-vkei to do so in our Discord.
